【談話】関東大震災発生より100年／[Talk] 100 Years since the Great Kanto Earthquake

　大正12（1923）年9月1日11時58分、関東大震災が発生しました。死者・行方不明者は10.5万人といわれており、明治以降最大の被害を出した災害です。昼時ということもあり、家庭では火を扱っていたため、火災が多く発生しました。また、台風による強風の吹き込みにより、延焼被害が多かったそうです。このようなことから、本震災では犠牲者の多くが焼死であったといわれています。

　この日から今日で100年が経過します。今では防災の日として、防災意識を高める活動がなされる自治体や学校も多いです。ご家庭においても、自然災害から生き残ることができるよう、また、災害による被害を少しでも抑えられるよう、避難経路の確認や防災セットの確認を今一度行っていただくよう、お願いします。

　そして11時58分、犠牲者の方々に対し、我々とともに黙祷を捧げていただきたいと思います。

　9月1日が関東大震災発生日であり、これからも日本国民の防災の日であり続け、忘れられることのないことを願います。

The Great Kanto Earthquake occurred at 11:58 a.m. on September 1, 1923 (Taisho 12). The number of dead or missing is said to be 105,000, making it the most devastating disaster since the Meiji era. Because it was daytime and people were handling fire at home, many fires broke out. In addition, the strong winds blown in by the typhoon caused a lot of damage from the spread of fire. Because of this, it is said that most of the victims of this disaster were burnt to death.

Today marks the 100th year since the day of the earthquake. Nowadays, many local governments and schools have designated this day as Disaster Prevention Day to raise awareness of disaster prevention. At home, we ask that you once again check your evacuation routes and disaster prevention kit so that you can survive natural disasters and limit the damage caused by disasters as much as possible.

And at 11:58 a.m., I would like to ask you to join us in offering a moment of silence for the victims.

I hope that September 1, the day of the Great Kanto Earthquake, will continue to be a Disaster Prevention Day for the people of Japan and will never be forgotten.
